Born in Myrtle Creek, October 24, 1956. Stanford University, B.A., 1979; master’s degree in Public Policy from Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, 1982. He was Executive Director of Portland Habitat for Humanity before serving as President of the World Affairs Council of Oregon for seven years, where he continues to serve on the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Mary, have two children.

Elected to the Oregon House of Representatives, 1999; became Speaker of the House in 2007. Elected to the U.S. Senate, 2008. Committee member: Banking, Housing and Urban Development; Budget; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; and Environment and Public Works. Term expires 2015.
